Why use dangerous chemicals?
There are some nasty facts that are convenient to ignore when we want a quick fix for a clogged drain pipe. It is too easy to go to the nearest supermarket or hardware store and grab one of those chemical drain plumbers. But the toxic ingredients they contain can be a danger to you, your children, your pipes, our waterways and wildlife. The unpleasant truth about traditional drain cleaners is that they are potent because they are made of corrosive, harmful and caustic base ingredients such as sodium hydroxide (lye), potassium hydroxide or sodium hypochlorite (bleach).
The acid drain cleaners contain dimethylbenzyl ammonium chloride or sulfuric acid. These various different chemicals can cause skin, eye, nose, throat, sinus and lung irritation. Some can eat right through skin! In addition, they can damage the kidneys, liver, and central nervous system. If swallowed, they can be deadly. Even though most sulfuric acid cleaners are primarily used by professionals they still pose a hazard. According to NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration): “The colorless oily liquid is corrosive to metals and tissue.
Long term exposure to low concentrations or short term exposure to high concentrations can result in adverse health effects from inhalation. It is highly reactive and capable of igniting finely-divided combustible materials on contact. When heated, it emits highly toxic fumes.” It can also “react violently with water”. It is corrosive to all body tissues. Inhalation of vapor may cause serious lung damage. Contact with eyes may result in total loss of vision.” From here the list of toxic effects goes on.
Harmful to lungs, skin and eyes
According to Science Lab, the substances may be toxic to upper respiratory tract, skin, eyes. Repeated or prolonged exposure to the substance can produce target organs damage. Some of these chemicals have smells that are somewhat unpleasant. “Masking” fragrances are added to cover up these smells. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health has found that “one-third of the substances used in the fragrance industry are toxic.” Companies aren’t required to list their ingredients because the chemical formulas are considered trade secrets, so they only have to label them as containing “fragrance.” They are almost always synthetic and as a result may produce acute effects such as headache, sneezing, respiratory irritation, and watery eyes in sensitive individuals or allergy and asthma sufferers. Dyes are used to make the mucky-colored chemicals more pleasing to the eye, making the products more marketable. Due to the ‘trade secret’ nature of these chemical drain cleaners it is nearly impossible to determine the exact chemicals used in these dyes.

Liquid drain cleaners may cause plumbing problems
Chemical drain cleaners are easy to find and relatively cheap, particularly when you compare the price of a bottle of drain opener to the cost of a visit from a plumber. However, these products could end up being very expensive in the long run, as they are dangerous both to pipes and to people. The chemicals in them eat away at these soft clogs near the surface of the drain opening, but they can eat away at other things. And if you have used chemical drain opener with no success, you will have to manually unclog the sink. If the caustic chemicals remain in the pipes behind a deep clog, they may be stirred up by your further unclogging efforts and could come up the drain. Old plumbing is particularly susceptible to further problems when these drain openers are used. Metal pipes can be eaten away by liquid drain cleaners. If you use these often, or if your pipes are otherwise compromised, the cleaner can create a hole in the pipe, and this, in turn, leads to a much bigger plumbing problem. While liquid drain cleaners may seem like a good, quick, inexpensive way to fix a clog, they are incredibly dangerous and risky.
Understand the dangers and the alternatives
If someone asked you to list some of the most dangerous cleaners in your home, would you think of chemical drain cleaners? More than 2,000 people were injured using them in the last year. Consumer Reports tested 15 chemical drain cleaners, as well as plungers and other mechanical devices. Testers clogged test drains with various problem substances, including fat, soap, hair, and toothpaste. The tests showed that most of the chemical drain cleaners, even though they contain strong chemicals, weren’t very effective. One type, crystal drain cleaners, did better but the chemicals in those are even more dangerous and quite caustic. They produce a gas and a vapor and the pipes themselves actually get hot. Mechanical devices are much safer and quicker-acting. Top ratings go to a little device you hook up to a hose. It uses water pressure and works fast! It’s the Drain King VIP1 for $20.Another good choice is a canister of compressed gas. You put it over the drain and release a burst of air. One that can be reused up to 15 times and costs about $20 is the CLR Power Plumber Pressurized Drain Opener Plunger Kit. Consumer Reports says the $6 Master Plunger is also a good tool to have on hand. Testers found its new accordion style even more effective than the conventional design. Consumer Reports says when it comes to drains, the old adage “an ounce of prevention is worth of pound of cure” definitely applies. Some of the best ways to keep drain clogs at a minimum is to use strainer covers in your sinks. And avoid pouring grease down the kitchen sink. It’s one of the main causes of drain backups. Blue Eagle Drain Cleaner is specifically designed to maintain your drains and prevent clogs.
